Old Age Home - Thiruvananthapuram

This residential care facility for the elderly is built on a simple belief: a home, not an institution, should let its residents keep their dignity and identity. Each resident has a personal space of their own, with a 90 × 210 cm bed, a side table and personal storage, and the beds are grouped into small dormitories of eight that feel like households and not wards. In each dormitory, the locker room doubles as a meeting place, sitting where residents pass every day so that a routine stop becomes a chance to talk. The dining hall is the heart of the home, set between the residential blocks, with one wall serving as a TV or projector screen and the same space turning into a reading room for newspapers. At the centre of the plan is a courtyard open to the sky, with a pebbled walkway that brings daylight, fresh air and greenery into every surrounding block. The blocks form a closed ring around it, which gives security without walls: the building itself is the boundary, the campus stays open and walkable, and a single controlled entry and exit, with a separate service entry beside the kitchen, keeps movement simple to manage. Care stays discreet, with the isolation cell and staff block together at one corner, close enough to respond quickly and away from everyday spaces, and a first floor over the staff block for storage and auxiliary use.
